From, "Yay!!! It's Snowing.....to, "Enough Already!!"

The Road to Spring

Our local folks have got it rough, addicted to four seasons

Still, northerners are mighty tough, and these would be the reasons:

Let’s start with January One, still winter’s early dawning.

It’s bare and cold, all life seems gone, the dark days leave us yawning.

The snow arrives by fits and starts, to pile up in long furrows;

While people huddle in their coats, and critters in their burrows.

In February, hope awakes, it sniffs and wags its tail,

As Phil the Groundhog is disturbed, and broken out of jail.

Then even though more snow may fall, and even though it’s cold:

Spring could arrive, the wives’ tale says, though incorrect and old.

But, every year, against the odds, the masses hope for spring;

As winter hauls its knickers up…Can’t breathe for snickering.

Thank God for chocolate Valentines, romantic florist flowers:

Which help to soothe our winter woes and while away its hours.

Here’s to February: its shortness wise and fine.

Twenty-eight days of agony….sometimes twenty-nine.

Then March assumes the center stage of calendars galore.

The lion roars, the Ides flow by, and spring is at the door!

Below the Mason-Dixon Line, it’s obviously spring.

But north of that, expect the snow to have a final fling.

Yet in the final days of March, April for sure….or May,

You’ll be surprised by signs of life….spring is on the way!

Snowdrops will defy the frost to bloom beneath the snow.

Sweet crocuses will dare to bloom, where tulips fear to grow.

Among the trees, the daffodils and trillium appear,

Inspiring northerners to shout, “Survived another year!”

The road is long, like underwear, and both will make us itchy.

Too soon our patience will grow thin…The nicest of us “bitchy.”

Strip off those wooly garments, put old winter on the run,

Then undaunted, pale and naked,

Bravely step into the sun!

The Ides of April Draw Nigh....
