Katie and Alex’ Wedding Blessing
On Saturday, October 3, 2020, our middle grandson, Alex, and his Sweet Katie were married on the farm where Alex is livestock manager. A wonderful man named Thomas Dean performed the first farm wedding he had ever officiated using scriptures obviously selected to suit the setting and making the ceremony light hearted and personal in ways that tugged at the heart-strings. Among the groomsmen, were the couple’s two dogs, Waylon and Wesley…..formally attired.
Alex, who has attended a few Colesville Rotary meetings, wanted an opening poem/prayer for the reception….as well as a closing benediction. And those are what follow below….
Written just for Alex and Katie

Once upon a time…it’s an age-old line, and a fairy tale beginning;
There was a guy and a gal so fine and a heart each would be winning.
Once upon a windmill made of stone, and an Eastern cowboy dreaming
Of one he’d seen: lovely, long and lean and a romance he was scheming.
This young cowpoke, well, it ain’t no joke, all the lonely nights prevailin’,
But, life looked up when there came a pup, a loyal pal named Waylon…
Whose furry face helped win a place in the heart of charming Katie:
While her use of Wes to make love progress was just a trifle shady.
There was lunch impaled by a random nail on the ancient windmill door.
They were so entranced when two shadows danced where there’d only been one before.
Now, here they stand, walking hand in hand toward a future full of maybe’s;
And if insistence subdues resistance, why soon there will be babies!
They’ve shared their vows mid the chicks and cows and the charm of Sub-Edge Farm,
May this moment last as the years roll fast and its memory keep them warm.
So, raise a glass to salute the past that brought these two together;
Let’s pray that they will stay the course and all life’s woes will weather.
We gather here in this crazy year to implore our God above
That they may know a bond that grows into a lifelong love.
Amen.
Benediction
Dear family and friends,
The courtship ends…
And now the marriage begins.
In a world where darkness and light are foes,
We pray it’s the light that wins.
And Love IS the light that invades our plight,
That subdues our cares and woes.
Although we demand it,
We don’t understand it,
But seek it wherever it goes.
A house just might….be as dark as the night
Where a lonely soul resides…
Yet things grow bright
If we just invite
The Light of Love inside.
Alex loves Katie,
His sweetheart, his lady…
Life waits….
And together they dare it:
Their happy hearts humming, they thank you for coming,
To witness their day and to share it
So, as you depart
With your own happy heart,
May that sweet light surround you…
And may the love of the Lord above
Guide...and protect…
And astound you.
Amen.
