A Trio of Valentines...

Happy Valentine’s Day, my dears!

I hope your day has been full…of dreams of love….sighs for love gone by …or, even tears for a lost love, because love in any form, and of whatever duration, is worth whatever we invest in it.

If you hunt around in the archives, you may find any or all of these poems tucked away…but, in honor of the day, here they come all together. May at least one of them speak to your heart…and may love - in whatever form it takes - be a blessing all your days.

Valentine Love for 2017

Who is it knocks upon my heart, assumes a welcome, and indeed…

Is more than welcome, yes…more likely satisfies a need…

A need for comfort, conversation, a need for smiles, a need for touch:

A need for silence shared together, a peace we humans crave so much.

How joyous are those early moments, a look that links across a room,

Two souls unknown to one another, a moment when connections bloom.

They may be lovers just discovered, they may be long or fleeting

friends.

Who knows where such a path may lead, whence it began, or where it

ends?

What are the joys that make life sparkle, as if conveyed by God

above?

They are as varied as the stars, yet each contains the stamp of love.

The mother births a tiny babe, besotted by its helplessness,

Knows love that carries through a life of childhood angst and

naughtiness.

The father builds a happy home, whose strength provides

security,

Becomes the compass for the child and family solidarity.

Lovers and friends we all acquire as swiftly we grow older:

Priceless, indeed, the blissfulness of willing arms and shoulder.

They turn a house into a home, a hum-drum day into delight:

Our loved ones broaden every smile, subdue the terrors of the night.

Sometimes the treasures of our lives include a special protégé;

Sometimes, where there’s no chick nor child, acquired family saves

the day.

And, let us not forget the joy of trusting fuzzy faces,

Of ties to our ancestral homes, of yearned-for spots, of holy places.

The unconditional loves of pets, who welcome us back home,

Forgive our thoughtless absences, despite how long, how far we roam.

And, love of home, that shelter sweet, our sacred, self-selected place,

The sweet relief of safe return, once more within our chosen space.

So, all that knock upon my heart, are gifts of love, unearned, yet

mine…

Each one unique and priceless, yes, each one a living Valentine.

Valentine Love 2013

Defining love is hard to do,

Ephemeral, elusive bands

Entwine themselves around a heart,

And cause a reaching of the hands.

Perhaps Love starts in Heaven,

A comet of glitter streaking through,

Which orbits somehow to our realm,

And sifts like snow on me, on you.

It blossoms when surrounded by

The love of family, friends who care:

Its fragrance is the golden glow

That gilds the special times we share.

To share with all we know so well,

To squander in a flaming crush;

All kinds of love to season life

With constancy or passion’s rush.

Our times with those who’ve gone before,

Memories dearer far than gold.

Its magic makes us catch our breath:

It’s ever new, does not grow old.

Thus you and I are so entwined:

Strong ties, yet soft as any dove

Lash heart to heart, year after year

By that sweet mystery known as “Love.”

Thank God, it binds us each to each,

As through this world our paths may wind.

For there can be no greater gift

Than comfy, well-worn Valentines.

Valentine Love - 2010

Love begins beyond the sky,

A seed of light among the stars,

Which somehow finds its way to earth,

And even at birth has travelled far.

It grows…surrounded by

A Mother’s love, a Father’s care:

It ripens in the chrysalis

Of golden moments made to share….

To share with brothers, sisters, friends,

To lavish on a well-loved pet;

Good times with elders looking on,

Treasures too dear to forget.

It grows as long as life endures;

Fragile, yes, but also strong.

It binds us each to one another,

On our journeys all life long.

And if a day were set aside

To honor gifts from God above,

There’d be no greater candidate

Than all those feelings known as Love.
